Makala Cammack Represents FVMS at All State Chorus

February 23rd through 25th, Georgia Music Educators Association hosted an All State Chorus event at The Classic Center in Athens, GA. Here, the best choral students in Georgia gathered to learn and sing with prestigious choral directors from across the country. These students worked hard to get to this event, passing two rigorous auditions over the past few months. While attending the event, these students rehearsed over 20 hours to prepare a massive and incredible choral performance.

This year was significantly important for Fort Valley Middle School, having our first student ever to participate in this event. Makala Cammack made history this year being Fort Valley Middle School’s first student to achieve the honor of attending Georgia’s All State Chorus. Makala performed with the Middle School Treble Chorus. The FVMS Family is extremely proud of Makala and Mr. Young for representing Fort Valley Middle at this prestigious event.

Ms. Raymonia Mathis
Peach County Teacher of the Year!!

Fort Valley Middle School's Teacher of the Year was named the Peach County Teacher of the Year at the December 2nd BOE Meeting!  Congratulations to Ms. Mathis!!!

Ms. Mathis received her BS Degree in Accounting from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia and her Master of Public Administration Degree from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.

After working for the Office of Secretary of State for five years, she transitioned into the education field as a high school Mathematics teacher in the Bibb County School System.  A native of Fort Valley and a product of Peach County Schools, Ms. Mathis was ecstatic when she received the offer to come home to teach at Fort Valley Middle School.

Now in her tenth year of teaching, she finds her accomplishments in not what she has done, but in what her students are able to do.  It is her belief that in addition to teaching, it’s her responsibility to encourage her students to believe in themselves and always strive for excellence so they may become productive members of society.

Fort Valley Middle School 8th grade student, Justin Harris, was selected to serve as a Page for State Representative Patty J. Bentley on Friday, February 19, 2016.

Members of the House of Representatives sponsor students between the ages of 12-18 from their district to come to the State Capitol and serve for one day.  A House Page serves the members by delivering important information and messages into the House Chamber. This allows the students to learn more about their state government and how it functions.

Congratulations, Justin!!

Peach County School System Transitions to Peach County Charter School System
The Georgia Department of Education presented school districts in Georgia with three (3) options for use of greater flexibility to improve student achievement.  The options allowed school districts to operate as one of the following types of school systems:
1. IE² System
2. Charter System
3. Status Quo System
After considerable research, attending numerous workshops and numerous board meeting presentations on each of the options, Peach County Board of Education (the “Board”) decided that the Charter System was the best option for Peach County Schools.  The Board unanimously approved the Charter System option on June 2, 2015.

FVMS Teacher Attends Summer Institute FVMS teacher

While some educators were enjoying their summer break from work, one Fort Valley Middle School teacher was taking advantage of the two week National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Institute Program for Middle School Science Teachers.  Mrs. Bernessa Rawls-Baker was not just one of 22 teachers selected to participate in the 2014 summer hands-on workshop, but she was the only one selected from the state of Georgia.

NIST, known between 1901 and 1988 as the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), is a measurement standards laboratory which is a non-regulatory agency of the United States Department of Commerce.  As a second year teacher at Fort Valley Middle School , Mrs. Rawls-Baker continually strives to find curriculum demonstration resources that will enable her to connect research with real world practices. Mrs. Rawls-Baker stated, “With the increased emphasis on standards-based classrooms it is becoming even more imperative to seek opportunities that will enhance my current knowledge while introducing me to new methodology. I feel that attending this workshop has exposed me to resources that will positively impact my direct instruction in the areas of rigor and relevance that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to.”

The NIST Summer Institute Program provided selected teachers hands-on activities, lectures, tours, and visits with NIST scientists and engineers at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Resources received at the workshop provided teachers with instructional materials and ideas that can be incorporated into their lesson plans and emphasize real-world applications.

The Choice Bus Visits FVMS

The Choice Bus visited Fort Valley Middle on Feb. 27th.  It is an experience based learning tool designed to show people the power of education, as well as the likely consequences of choosing to drop out of school.  It contains a full scale replica of a prison cell! Students learned about the potential earnings of a drop out versus a high school and college graduate.  As students exited the bus, they received a pledge card and were asked to make a commitment to finish school and make good choices! The Choice Bus is sponsored by the Mattie C. Stewart Foundation.
