ESOL Program The English of Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) goals are to assist English Language Learners (ELLs) to obtain English language proficiency and to meet grade and age appropriate academic promotion and graduation. It is a state funded program instructional program in grades K – 12. Learners of English in our school system create unique opportunities for educators and students to learn about different cultures and languages. A diverse population also challenges educators to develop programs to afford opportunities for these students in school and reach their goals. Students in Peach County are selected based on performance on the State Criterion Referenced Competency Test. Others may be selected based on the results of a state-designed checklist. A score less than 300 indicate that a student is in need of services provided through the Early Intervention Program. The initial contact between international families and school personnel is crucial in establishing an atmosphere of welcome and comfort in the new environment. Thus, training in the dynamics of diversity is a worthwhile endeavor for all school employees. This includes an awareness of personal values, attitudes, and beliefs. Students are screened for placement in the ELL program using the LAB or Language Assessment Battery. Age and grade appropriate assistance is provided each student. The ACCESS, a language proficiency test, is administered in the spring to determine the overall language growth of each child. Other state mandated assessments will be administered also.
