As you can see, we have begun a virtual book study. It is totally voluntary. I email it to the entire staff daily, and each person has the right to either read or delete. Why in the world would I do that?
First of all, I am tired of constantly being pulled away from my personal purpose and the district's global purpose by all the negative "mess" that surrounds all of us these days. Norman Vincent Peale counseled people to "Stay away from negative individuals; it's catching." So, a daily piece of something positive, something that causes me to think and moves me forward both personally and professional is rewarding.
Secondly, everyone in our school district needs encouragement. I guess if you get right down to it, everyone in every school district needs encouragement. Too many people have nothing better to do than look for the negative in every situation. Those folks constantly focus on why we can't do things and paint a brilliant portrait of failure with broad brush strokes. But, I have evidence that when we focus on what we believe the right thing to be, we gain energy and creativity. And solutions for the most difficult of problems often come to us seemingly from out of the blue.
Lastly, I truly enjoy connecting with all of our staff on a more personal level. Their comments and emails break down the wall between "the superintendent" and "the staff." We become colleagues - just Susan and Jane or Dave or Tamara. We get to know each other as people - not simply positions. And it is at that level of personal relationship that communication among people really begins to happen. When I know you as a person and you know me as a person, perceptions flee and personal experience becomes real; problems can be solved, and all of us can succeed.
