Gifted Girls Go Green

The gifted students in Mrs. Janie Stump’s 2nd-4th grade resource class at Hunt Elementary School in Fort Valley collaborated with The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Chapter Gammi Pi Omega of Fort Valley, GA in creating projects to enter in the Presidential Environmental Youth Award competition.

After studying a unit on Rivers and Pollution, the class decided to utilize our local resources, the Fort Valley Public Works Department and the Flint Riverkeeper to help with some environmental clean-up projects.

On Friday, March 21, the class met Mr. Ben Carpenter and his helper, Chuy, at the Everett Square park. Ms. Donnette Bellamy, a member of AKA and an Instructional Coordinator for the Peach County School system, accompanied the group as they tagged the storm drains in the College St, Central Ave., Church St., Everett Square, Knoxville St. area. The tags advise NO DUMPING and are placed with adhesive to the storm drains.

On Thursday, March 27, the class went out Highway 96 West to the boat ramp at the Flint River and met Mr. Gordon Rogers, the Flint Riverkeeper. With his help, the students cleaned up trash, litter, and garbage from the site. Mrs. Tanya Duncan, President of AKA, accompanied the Go Green Girls on this trip.

These experiences brought to life the Georgia Performance Standards studied in class as well as gave the students a chance to do much needed service projects for the community.   Check out the Image Gallery for pictures.
