Solar Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, we will experience a solar eclipse of the sun. The eclipse will begin around 1:00 p.m. and peak around 2:40 p.m. It will be a phenomenal event, and perhaps one that we will never experience again in our lifetime.

Each school will provide students with meaningful learning opportunities to help them learn about the eclipse. Because the eclipse will pose some safety challenges, anyone planning to view it should wear a pair of solar viewing glasses. We have purchased every student a pair of solar viewing glasses.

We will not have early release for students; however, we will make every attempt to ensure students are wearing their solar viewing glasses and enjoy this once-in-a
lifetime event! Below are our dismissal times:

Leo’s 26-year-old sister, Emily, has had health complications that required more care than their mother, Sharon, could provide on her own. During his freshman year at Peach County High School, that began to visibly affect him.

My Teacher is TOPS!

FVMS Teacher Attends Summer Institute

While some educators were enjoying their summer break from work, one Fort Valley Middle School teacher was taking advantage of the two week National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Institute Program for Middle School Science Teachers.  Mrs. Bernessa Rawls-Baker was not just one of 22 teachers selected to participate in the 2014 summer hands-on workshop, but she was the only one selected from the state of Georgia.

NIST, known between 1901 and 1988 as the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), is a measurement standards laboratory which is a non-regulatory agency of the United States Department of Commerce.  As a second year teacher at Fort Valley Middle School , Mrs. Rawls-Baker continually strives to find curriculum demonstration resources that will enable her to connect research with real world practices. Mrs. Rawls-Baker stated, “With the increased emphasis on standards-based classrooms it is becoming even more imperative to seek opportunities that will enhance my current knowledge while introducing me to new methodology. I feel that attending this workshop has exposed me to resources that will positively impact my direct instruction in the areas of rigor and relevance that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to.”

The NIST Summer Institute Program provided selected teachers hands-on activities, lectures, tours, and visits with NIST scientists and engineers at the NIST Campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Resources received at the workshop provided teachers with instructional materials and ideas that can be incorporated into their lesson plans and emphasize real-world applications.

PCHS Automotive Program

The automotive program will be hosting a Drive 4 UR School event at Peach County High School. This year they need more support than ever. They have a goal set for 300 households to come out and test-drive a new Ford. This is the main fundraiser that the automotive program has to raise money for the engine build team and other special projects. This takes the burden off the local economy and brings up to $6000 to our school. Pick up you friends and neighbors to help us reach our goal.

This is how it works. For test driving a vehicle, Ford will donate $20 per household to our school up to $6000. There will not be any sales pitches, just a short survey that you complete after the drive. The only requirement is you must have a valid driver’s license and be 18+ years old, it is just that simple.

Peach County Schools REACH Scholars

Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH) provides Georgia’s low-income, academically promising students with the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school, access college, and achieve post-secondary success.  This program was created by  Governor Deal in 2012  and REACH is a key component of Governor Deal’s Complete College Georgia, which focuses on college completion to improve Georgia’s future prosperity. REACH Georgia partners with local school systems to identify low-income, academically promising middle school students. Once a school system is a partner, eligible middle school students enrolled in the system have the opportunity to apply to participate. Scholars are selected at the local level by community members and school personnel.  When a student is chosen as a REACH Scholar, the student is provided with comprehensive support, additional college-related activities, and the promise of a financial scholarship upon successful program completion.

The REACH GA Signing Ceremony is the state signing day for all school systems participating in the REACH GA program to celebrate and present there scholars to their local community.

High School Math Options for 2015-2016

The State Board of Education approved new traditional/discrete math course options. Starting with the 2015-16 school year, high schools will be able to offer integrated or traditional/discrete math. Surveys conducted by the State Board of Education and Regional Educational Service Agencies found that many educators desired a choice between integrated and traditional/discrete math.  Read to find out what option Peach County High School has chosen. It is very important that students discuss their college and future plans with their school counselor and parents. It is always important to review the admission requirements of the college or university the student wishes to attend to be certain the student is registered for the courses that are required by that college or university for admissions.
